Why Superbikes Struggle to Balance Comfort & Performance

The best supersport machines must be capable of delivering blistering acceleration, razor‐sharp handling, and insane lean-angles. That means things like ergonomics, suspension tuning, and rider accommodations can sometimes be an afterthought (or for some models, left off the table entirely).

Those of you who have spent ample time riding supersports already know what we’re talking about. You’ve probably come to expect aggressive rider triangles with rear-set pegs and low bars that increase forward lean. You’re probably used to racing suspension setups that send shockwaves up your spine whenever the pavement is less than perfect.

And then there are the seats. Most stock supersport saddles are narrow, low, and thin. No room for extra padding when you’re trying to reduce height and weight.

All that means fatigue tends to set in fast. Of course, that’s hardly an issue when you’re only planning to sit on the bike for as long as it takes to break a track record. But it’s a literal pain on longer trips.

BMW originally designed the S1000RR for the World Superbike Championship back in 2008. At that point, it had a much smaller cockpit and manually adjustable suspension that could be unforgiving if you didn’t fine-tune it properly.

• BMW’s “M-Sport” seat options (available in low or high versions) make it fairly easy to adjust the seat height as well. Most tall riders will want to choose a higher seat to reduce their knee angle, while most shorter riders will want to choose the lower option so it’s easier to swing a leg over the bike and flat-foot it during stops.

• There’s also a noticeably expanded cockpit compared to the previous generation, which makes longer street rides considerably less cramped but doesn’t compromise the bike’s aerodynamics.

Built-In Comfort Features

Comfort on a motorcycle isn’t all about body position, although that’s certainly one of the most important factors. The right rider aides and amenities can also go a long way towards reducing fatigue.

On a bike this expensive, it would be practically criminal for BMW not to include a few choice luxuries. Fortunately, that’s exactly what they did. Highlights here include:

• A short-throw throttle (58° instead of 72°) to reduce wrist strain during long or technical rides.

• Cruise control to reduce throttle fatigue on long stretches of road.

• Heated grips to keep your hands warm during cold early morning rides.

• Pro Riding Modes that let you tailor throttle response, traction control, and engine braking to your needs. All of this reduces the amount of manual labour required on your part when riding.

The result? The S1000RR feels surprisingly accommodating for a 200-plus horsepower machine.

But even the best bikes on the market can be improved. Riders looking to stretch out their saddle time on the S1000RR often start with these simple upgrades:
