Actual chrome is an electroplated layer of chromium metal bonded to a base material (usually steel). That difference is important because genuine chrome responds differently to products and polishing techniques than other surfaces.

These take the most abuse of any chrome part on your bike. Heat, moisture from combustion, road grime, and constant thermal expansion and contraction all work against the finish. Chrome exhausts are also the most likely to develop discoloration (blueing or yellowing) from heat.

Chrome itself doesn't rust. The chromium layer is actually very corrosion-resistant. The problem is that the chrome on your motorcycle is rarely a thick, solid plate. Brake dust in particular is chemically reactive and can accelerate corrosion if left sitting on chrome.
Chrome near your exhaust is fighting a different battle. The thermal expansion and contraction that happens every time the engine heats up and cools down creates stress in the plating. Eventually, that stress causes tiny cracks, which let moisture in. Heat also causes the discoloration (the yellow-to-blue colour shifts) that most riders associate with exhaust chrome. That's oxidation happening at the surface, not rust underneath, but it's the beginning of a degradation process.
It sounds minor, but the oils from your hands are mildly acidic and will slowly etch chrome if left to sit. You'll notice this most on bars, levers, and trim pieces (the parts you touch most often).
Using the wrong products on chrome actually accelerates damage. Abrasive cleaners scratch through the plating.
